Cookies and local storage

The cookies and browser storage that the site's own code sets, with the purpose and lifetime of each. The list is generated from the code, and an automated test compares it with the code.

What the site stores

    Purpose
    An anonymous session identifier. It lets the server limit how fast one visitor can send requests, and lets a guest keep the vehicles they chose to save, follow or compare and, only if they switch it on, the list of vehicles they opened.
    Contents
    A random identifier. No name, e-mail address or IP address.
    When it is set
    When you search for a vehicle, look up a registration number, ask for a valuation, send a sell request, start signing in, or save, follow or compare a vehicle, and you have no identifier yet. Opening a page, including a vehicle page, sets nothing.
    Lifetime
    1 day. Saving, following or comparing a vehicle, or switching on the list of opened vehicles, extends it to 60 days.

  • viq_login_state

    Party
    First party: set by vehiq.app
    Purpose
    Holds the one-time data of a sign-in between the redirect to the sign-in service and your return, so the return cannot be forged.
    Contents
    Encrypted sign-in data: state, nonce, a code verifier, the page to return to and your guest session identifier.
    When it is set
    When you start signing in. It is deleted when the sign-in ends, also if it fails.

    10 minutes.

  • viq_auth

    Purpose
    Keeps you signed in so the account features work (garage, saved vehicles, export and deletion of your data).
    Contents
    An encrypted session: access and refresh tokens, expiry, your account identifier and your e-mail address if the sign-in service provides one.
    When it is set
    After a successful sign-in. It is deleted when you sign out.
    Lifetime
    30 days.

    Keeps your navigation language when you visit a page without a translation.

    When you open a translated page or choose a language.

  • NEXT_LOCALE

    Purpose
    Remembers the interface language you chose.

    A language code. No identifier.
    When it is set
    When you choose a language with the language switcher, and when the site redirects you between language addresses (for instance an old link that names another language than your browser asks for) to keep the language you were sent to. Opening a page does not set this cookie.
    Lifetime
    1 year when you choose the language yourself; until you close the browser when the site set it during a redirect.

    Purpose
    Remembers the colour theme you chose: dark, light or the one your device prefers.
    Contents
    One of three values that say which theme you chose. No identifier.
    When it is set
    Only when you pick a theme with the control in the footer. Until then there is no such cookie and the site is dark.

  • vehiq.search.recent

    First party: set by vehiq.app
    Purpose
    Shows your latest searches as a shortcut in the search box.
    Contents
    Up to 8 searches (the query, the market and the time). The list is never sent to a server.
    When it is set
    When you run a search in the search box. Entries older than the retention period are removed the next time the list is read.
    Lifetime
    Entries older than 30 days are removed.

What this list covers

The list shows what the code of vehiq.app sets in your browser. The code sets no cookie for analytics, advertising or tracking across sites.

Cookies set by a service in front of the site, such as a content delivery network, are not visible to the code and are not on this list.

The editors' area of the content system sets its own cookies. They are never set for visitors, so they are not on this list.

Consent: none of the items needs your consent, so the site shows no cookie banner. The sign-in and abuse-protection items (viq_sid, viq_login_state and viq_auth) are strictly necessary for something you asked for or for the security of the site. The language, theme and recent-searches items are set only when you make that choice yourself, hold no identifier and are used for nothing else; the law on electronic communications (in Sweden, lagen om elektronisk kommunikation) does not require consent for storage that is needed to give you a service you asked for. If the site ever adds a cookie for analytics or advertising, it will ask for your consent first.

Your choices

Your language and your latest searches are stored only in your browser. You can delete them in your browser's settings.

The list of vehicles you opened is off until you switch it on in My garage, under Recently viewed. Switching it off deletes the list.

If you delete the identifier cookie in your browser, the vehicles you saved, followed or compared as a guest can no longer be reached from that browser.
